Lycopersicon esculentum. Plant produces high yields of 2 oz red pear shaped tomatoes. The tomatoes have excellent flavor and have extra long shelf life. Excellent for salads, and for making sauce and paste. Suitable for containers and patio pots. Roma tomatoes are grown in the United States, Mexico, Australia, and also possibly in Great Britain. The vines are determinate and fruit heavily, making Roma a popular variety with gardeners who do a lot of home canning. While Roma is an open-pollinated variety rather than a hybrid, it has been steadily improved to the point where most Roma tomato vines are fusarium wilt and verticillium resistant (thus the VF in the name). Most commercial plum tomatoes sold in markets in the Western Hemisphere are Romas or related types.
This is my first attempt at growing tomatoes in containers on my balcony. In mid-June I planted three varieties: Green Zebra, Carmello, and Window Box Roma. All were purchased as starter plants from White Flower Farms in Torrington Connecticut. They were a Husband’s Day gift from my husband.
