After having tried several trees in the front yard, this is the only one to survive. Judging from the fact that nearly every species of plant I have in my xeriscape ends in “japonica”, including this one, I’m guessing that they must have pretty similar conditions. Anyway, this tree has done great. I’d worried it died this last year, but it apparently loses its leaves early in the fall, and doesn’t sprout new ones until late in the spring. I planted it on Arbor Day in 2006. To date, it’s the only tree I’ve ever planted in my life that lived. w00t. Supposedly, once it matures, I should see some brilliant red leaves in the fall. The last two years, I’ve only seen the leaves turn a dull brown.
