merank's Tomato 'Red Currant' x 1 Harvesting
Plant: Wild tomato (Solanum pimpinellifolium) | Variety: Red Currant

It was thoroughly overwhelmed by spidermites swarm this summer, so I gave up and cut it down to soil-level in the pot on Aug 20. I didn’t yank the roots out because the parsley in the same pot was still doing fine. The tomato plants grew back from the roots, the worst of the spidermites are long gone, and now there are tiny green tomatoes!

How do you like the current tomatoes? I grew them last summer and the only thing I would change is to move them to their own location so they can run free. We had LOTS of tomatoes off the one plant. I would almost consider it invasive!

I like them quite a bit- good flavor, lots of tomatoes, small enough that I don’t need to chop them for salads, and they seem to ripen very quickly. That last one is a surprise since they spend about half of each week inside to dodge the frosts.
Thank you for the tip about them being so enthusiastic – will keep that in mind for this year. My plant is only 4 feet tall, but it hasn’t exactly had optimal conditions.
