Two 20-year-old trees. Very heavy producers, every other year. 2010 was a full harvest. 2011 has nothing.
After much research, I believe that these two trees are a “Sand Plum”. Too sour to eat off the tree, but makes a tremendously excellent jelly. And, the juice works really well with other fruits if I need more pectin. I have also made Chinese Plum Sauce.

My research indicates that Sand Plums are sometimes called Chickasaw Plums, but I think they must be different. Everything I’ve read says that Chickasaw has thorns and these don’t.
I’ve also seen reference to “Hog Plums”, but these look much different.
The trees are stunning in the Spring and the fruit is gorgeous. It really is too bad that they’re so sour.

Harvesting day
Made juice for jelly. About a gallon. May freeze it for later because it’s just too hot to can jelly right now.
