Planted from a bulb from a place called The Garlic Farm that had a stall at the British Cheese Festival (of all places). With the bulb came some really good detailed instructions on how to grow the various types of garlic that they sell:
“Early Wight: A purple, hard necked, ophioscorodon type garlic, originating from Chinese stock. This will be ready to harvest in May in the South, early June further north. Harvest and consume as soon as it is ready. Keeps well for 2-3 months after harvest.
Garlic will grow on most fertile soils. It will not grow well in acid soils, so if you know your ground is acid, ensure your soil is limed. Soil pH should be above 6.7. Lighter soils will usually produce brighter, whiter bulbs. Heavier soils grow good garlic but there may be some staining of the outer skins which should not effect the keeping quality.”
I ended up planting 4 cloves in a container and set it out on the bedroom windowsill – that sill gets some nice afternoon sunshine at the moment.
