I really like fresh basil and couldn’t imagine not including it in my garden.
I did my container in lasagna layers: started with newspaper on the bottom so nothing leaks out, then organic compost, organic potting mix, organic peat moss and repeated those soil layers ending with potting mix.

Your description makes me want to whip up a batch of marinara sauce. Interesting planting concept.

I like the idea about layering the container soil/compost. I just started composting a few months ago and am impatient to have some good compost to plant with.

I really like that idea. Have you experimented with other layers – perhaps excluding one? I ask because as an apartment dweller, we don’t really have the option of composting here.

I used store bought compost. This is my first container garden, so I haven’t experimented much with it.

Interesting— haven’t tried that with containers, but except for the newspaper it’s almost exactly how I rebuilt the soil in my vegetable garden recently, in layers like that— my compost, top soil mixed with sand, mushroom compost, peat, mushroom compost.
