This is going to need a LOT of cheating to grow in South Pasadena. I bought it because I love the taste – I didn’t look carefully at the chill hours needed. Oops.
Sold by Raintree as ‘Striped Gravenstein’ but I believe it was called that just to distinguish it from ‘Red Gravenstein’. It’s probably plain ol’ ‘Gravenstein’. Grafted to EMLA 27.
From All About Apples http://www.allaboutapples.com/backyard/rootstock.htm :
M.27, EMLA 27 — Size: 20-25%. This rootstock is too small for most standard orchards. It is very early bearing and very productive, yet fruit size is reduced. Works best in well drained soils and is resistant to collar rot in that soil type. It is susceptible to fire blight and tomato ringspot virus. The rootstock is slow to harden off.
