Ode to the Green Things

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a land far, far away, there lived a little girl whose mother grew pretty red flowers that dripped liquid sugar, which the girl gently removed from the stems and enjoyed with great satisfaction.

And the little girl’s mother’s mother grew pretty white flowers dripping with honey that grew over a fence between the grandma’s house and her nice neighbor. The girl carefully tasted of the flowers each time she visited her grandmother’s home.

As the little girl began to grow, she learned that her mother’s pretty red flowers were called Impatiens, and her grandmother’s pretty white flowers were called Honeysuckle. Not much caring what the names of the flowers were, the little girl loved to look at them and taste their sweetness.

Years later, the girl tried over and over, and over again, to find a taste so sweet…

She tasted cakes and cookies,
doughnuts and pies.
Sweet indeed,
but they stuck to her thighs!

But drinking juices made from greens
help her fit into her skinny jeans!

Alas, the budget – tighter than her favorite clothes -
inspires the girl to discover what grows

Should’ve started in March, rather than May
She wondered which plants might still want to play…

With nifty Jiffy Pellets full of soft Peat
She watered and waited for some kind of treat.

May 5th was the day, Cinco de Mayo
Her husband didn’t think anything would grow.

Only two short days later, she saw with a grin
DeCicco Broccoli, bursting out life from within!

Oh, how excited… How full of glee!
How delicious her salad in two months will be!
Spinach, Broccoli, Cucumbers and Peas…
Hemp Seeds, Olive Oil and Vinegar Please!

Skinny jeans, tank tops and loads of great fun -
Gifts of the plant gods, all blessed by the sun!
