Hellebore 'Green Heron' Hellebore 'Green Heron' - first-year thoughts
I have mixed feelings about this hellebore.
Pros:
1) It was the first plant to bloom this year.
2) The flowers are a perfect light-green, and contrast nicely with the foliage.
3) It’s attractive in the landscape— interesting without being showy.Cons:
1) It droops. I know that hellebores droop by nature, but the branches are so short that I can’t even get supports under the flowers, so the flowers inevitably kiss the bark mulch and get bruised.
2 ) The flowers aren’t all that interesting on their own— single and flat.I wonder if there’s anything I could be doing to help this plant gain some height. It’s a newish cultivar, so there’s not much information on the internet about its standard growth habit.
I’m happy with the collective effect of the hellebores in this bed in early spring— they’re underplanted with daffodils that stick up through the foliage in places, and the effect is very natural— in a staged, landscaped way! I’d like to add a few more hellebores, but for the moment, the expense of the cultivars I want deters expansion.
