    Drought Distressed Snowball Bush.

About 12-15’ tall, and about 10’ wide, this snowball bush only has green and somewhat green leaves left on the ends of the branches. I have been giving it a full days watering with a soaker hose 3 to 4 times a week now for a few weeks. Is there anything else that I can do to help it...

Unseasonable seedlings...and blisters on me fingers!

Red Twig Dogwood , Juniper Bush , Hydrangea 'Blue Heaven' , Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' , Lavender 'Hidcote' ...
Yesterday and today I’ve spent a great deal of time finishing my pruning. The “Annoying Bush” next to my front door has been cut back to 36" all around, and I’ve finally identified it as a Red Twig Dogwood. Apparently it is a popular shrub for many gardeners, but in m...

    Winter flowering shrubs

Lonicera 'Winter Beauty' , Magic Dragon , Terrace garden , Viburnum , and Terrace garden
A strange time to choose to do this as the weather is very springlike this week, but I had a garden voucher to spend so bought three winter-flowering shrubs. Have planted them out in a container on the terrace to fill a gap we have in the hedge on that side. Intend to keep them well pruned once ...

    Update on the Driveway Garden

Since the photo of the Driveway Garden in my other journal sparked a bit of interest, I thought I’d bring it up to date. It is really starting to fill in nicely and look like we might have had some design in mind. Lots of times when we look at it, we see the weeds growing up around the bush...

The large Pieris that we moved just a couple weeks ago is doing very nicely, and seems to be settling in without any residual transplant trauma. It is in full bloom!

    Volunteer Red Twig

Cornus sericea - Red Twig Dogwood Breaking Dormancy and Driveway Garden garden
I have no idea where this bush came from – a lonely but determined volunteer. I saw it’s three short twigs growing toward the back of the Heritage Garden last fall, like it was trying to hide and escape notice. But with it’s bright red bark, it didn’t do inconspicuous very...

Driveway Garden garden , Rose - Shrub Rose Knockout Red 'Radrazz' Planting Out, Pieris japonica - Japanese ...
The Knock-out Roses I ordered last November arrived on Thursday – 12 really nice and healthy looking roses in 2-quart pots. I’ve never been the least disappointed with any plants I’ve gotten from Great Garden Plants, and these were no exception. Today was a beautiful day, really...

Firethorn Sprouting and Container (mostly garden
This plant was left with some sod attached as I had to move to make way for a section of fencing and had lain there in the open over-winter. But decided to plant in the ground in a corner where ‘persons’ or animals appear to be making an impression on the fence wire…..today afte...

    Hedges

Syringa vulgaris - Heirloom Lilac Breaking Dormancy
The hedge on the south side of our property is about three-quarters of tall Arborvitaes and about one-quarter of Lilac. I don’t have them logged in anywhere here on Folia, but I wanted to note that the Arborvitaes haven’t fully recovered from the damage they suffered from the heavy sn...

    Planting Hypericum

Hypericum prolificum - Shrubby St. Johnswort Planting Out, New Stuff Planting & Patiently Waiting garden , ...
The left-overs of the WS Shrubby St. John’s Wort that I had potted up did really well over the rest of the summer, growing to about 6 inches tall. The seedlings that I planted out in the BBB, however, didn’t do well at all, apparently. There is no sign of them. So, as the cold weather...

    Given away

Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii - Coral Berry 'Amethyst' and New Stuff Planting & Patiently Waiting garden
I had four rooted cuttings of this bush, which had grown very nicely. They had been potted and sitting in the garden workshop most of the summer. Today I gave them away to my friends at the plant swap. They were thrilled. If I want more, they are very easy to root, and our bush is strong and hea...

    Growing Coral Berry

Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii - Coral Berry 'Amethyst' Branching and New Stuff Planting & Patiently Waiting ...
The four Coral Berry rooted Cuttings have really taken off since potting them up. They are sending off new branches which are leafing out nicely. One even has some buds. I think there are two more cuttings that are in the rooting pot that must be ready to pot up. I glanced over and saw they were ...
