    Onion 'Walla Walla Sweet' Growing
My onions and green onions are doing pretty good. I just saw the first noticable growth yesterday. They are getting little fresh shoots of green up through the top. Woot!

    not yet....too anxious!

Onion 'Walla Walla Sweet' , brussels sprouts Growing, and Broccoli Growing
Onions aren’t sprouting or showing much change yet. No sprouts. I know I’m expecting them too early, but I guess I’m hoping we have miracle soil or something. The broccoli and brussels sprouts look very good and seem to have a little new growth but I didn’t get a pictur...

Onion sets 'Sturon' put in allotment

This afternoon I spent a couple of hours working on Gerry’s allotment where I prepared a bed for his Onions. He bought some Onion sets ‘Sturon’ to put in his allotment. So I planted them for him. He still has another bag of Onion sets but they are two different varieties, one wa...

Wet, With a Touch of Green!

Onion "Walla Walla" and Sunflower "Mammoth Russian"
I know I’ve been wanting spring lately, but two days of rain is a bit damp. I know, I can’t have it all my way. The snow has taken a butt-kicking, which is good for the gardener in me. All our recently started seeds have done pretty well, with the exception of our Walla Walla onions, ...

Who else in Zone 5 is starting seeds?

    Seed starting 2013 garden
I did my first seed starting of the season today— celery, leeks and onions. We haven’t had much of a winter in Chicago this year— wildly fluctuating temps, and almost no snow. Yesterday was the first snow near the lakefront that measured more than an inch. We have some actual wi...

    Harvesting

Greenhouse garden , Chilli Jalapeno 'Summer Heat' Harvesting, Chilli Pepper, De Cayenne Harvesting, Pepper...
Cleared onions from bed 5 and put to dry in greenhouse. As DSs are going to be finishing off the greenhouse interior soon – cementing, soil importation and erecting of bench and shelves – I’ve stripped many pepper plants of fruit so that there is just the one row on the west s...

Have you had a good growing season?

    Gerry & Dave's allotment garden
Have you had a good growing season? Blackberries 10/10: We’ve picked some Blackberries but there are 1,000s more on the bush at the top of Gerry’s allotment! Gooseberries 0/10 – not one (off of about 12 bushes!), the few I saw were very green but as Gerry said “The birds g...

    Onion "Alisa Craig" transplanted

Bunching onion 'Ishikuro' Planting Out, Onion 'Alisa craig' Planting Out, and Plot 12A garden
The few seedlings of my Onion “Alisa Craig” that survived in the greenhouse on Gerry’s plot were transplanted to my own allotment, Plot 12A. As they were very few I planted them alongside the Spring Onions ‘Ishikura’ of which I had only a few too. They were planted a...

    Harvesting Onions

Onion 'Superstar' Harvesting, Onion 'Candy' Harvesting, Main garden , Onion 'Red Candy' Harvesting, and Oni...
The Yellow Candy and the White Superstar onions are ready for harvest. The Candy onions are my favorite, and did the best this year. The White Superstars did pretty well too, although not all of them made it to maturity. I started with 22 and ended up with 17. The first two pics are Candy and Sup...

Blueberries PH is down, but that's a good thing

PEPPER: California Wonder (Heirloom) Transplanted, PEPPER: Early Jalapeno (Heirloom) Transplanted, and PEPP...
Ever since getting my blueberries and getting them in their containers with soil I was concerned about the high PH. Despite the addition of the soil sulfur, which I know is supposed to be slow acting, but it just didn’t seem to be dropping after weeks and even a couple of months. I can now ...

Tapping into the REAL Inner Farmchick

Today, I think, was the first day I’ve felt like I’m actually on my way to being my own farm chick instead of a wandering pretender who reads a lot of books and kills a lot of plants. Don’t get me wrong — I’m still batting about fifty-fifty on the dead plant thing, t...

Sets of Onions, and Some Peas

    Onion 'Dutch' and Onion, Multiplier
One of the things I like about living in the country, is the bulk seeds sold at the feed store. There are baskets full of onion sets, pea seeds, bean seeds, grass seed, and there are more bags in the back: buckwheat, annual ryegrass, all the cover crops you could imagine, all sold by the pound. T...

The onions are also sprouting in their egg cartons. Looking nice and healthy so far, although the soil from the garden I used is looking mouldy on top. It doesn’t seem to be affecting the onions any, so I will leave it be.

    Seeds Started

    Backyard Vegetable garden
I started my seeds (3 trays of 24) tonight to try to match my last frost date more closely this season. Last season I was very aggressive and the early transplanting may have stunted the plants, so we’ll see how things fair this year.
