    New setup for the Violets

AV Nursery garden and African Violet Collection garden
Seems like the story of my life over the past few months that I have been moving, rebuilding, rearranging, reorganizing… I hope it will settle down someday soon! So that said, after moving some furniture from one part of the house to another, I finally was able to set up my large light shel...

    My New Plant Shelf

I bought this at Ocean State Job Lot a few weeks ago for $20. I had some time alone today so I decided it was a perfect time to put it together when my dearest couldn’t interfere with screws and wire ties. No tools needed; the pieces just all fit together. Dimensions 65 inches tall x 27 wid...

    Bad to the Branch

Hi my Folian Friends, Today, in my beat up mess I call a “garden”, I have decided to bite the bullet and buy some camellias. These are going near the patio to provide a bit of protection. I need something that is tallish and that grows narrow. I wanted something pretty as it is nea...

    Question About Light

    The Baby garden
Do plants have to have a break from light? or can they have light 24 hours a day? Alaska comes to mind. Their summer months have no night and I hear the plants grow huge up there. Anyway, can I keep my grow lights on my plants all the time or do I have to turn them off?

    Hedge-murder

    Big Fenced garden
I chopped down a couple of hedge trees/bushes to make room for the addition of new cherry trees. I also trimmed back (a whole lot) some of the hedge bushes along the back fence. I think that these prevent adequate sunlight to reach the furthest planting row, on the left side. I’m hoping ...

    Changing location

Calathea rotundifolia and Inside the House garden
The brown crispy leaves have continued and I just haven’t been able to get this plant to do well. So I decided to move it – it is now in the spare bedroom where it will get bright indirect morning light.

New Stuff Planting & Patiently Waiting garden
OR, I Knew This Box Would Come in Handy They sprouted only a day or two ago, but these seedlings are already starting to look leggy. Damn! I had saved the box from my new computer which was about 10 inches wide. This was perfect – laid it on its side and put the seedling trays on top –...

    Coleus and impatiens cuttings

    Grow Light garden
Today I gave all the coleus and impatiens haircuts — they were going a little crazy under the lights — and I’ve potted some of the cuttings and put them back under the lights. Sixteen new coleus cuttings (four varieties) and two new impatiens cuttings.

Outdoor Light: finding the ideal location for seedlings?

Veggie Container garden , Radish "French Breakfast" Moved, and Rhubarb Chard
I have understood that seedlings should not be in direct sunlight at first because they are too delicate. At the same time, I attribute by problems with seedlings to poor light indoors so it seems to be the only choice. I’ve kept my radishes and chard sprouts outdoors from when they first...

    Supplemental light for tomatos?

    Patio Greenhouse garden
So the apartment gardening adventure begins. I’ve built myself a little greenhouse on my balcony. However, I only get afternoon sun (from about 2 pm onwards). I’m going to be growing tomatoes (Sweet 100’s), and I’m concerned about the paucity of light. If I were to run som...

    first signs of green!!!

    Deck garden
Herb seeds have appeared in the two pots under our cobbled together grow light. I lay three puffy, metallic envelopes (free from my IV meds packaging) around to increase the heat and light a few days ago, and now there are “tiny little sproutlings” (as Emily says).
