graibeard Nasturtium: harvesting and bud time 15 Very Happy Nasturtium (Jewel mix) Harvesting and Central East garden
I went to thin these out ready for the new arbor’s plantings and realized that they were full of fruit. Rather than waste them in the haste to plant, it was time to combine a cleanup with a harvest and do a batch of Pickled Nasturtium Buds , or mock capers. The crew were settling down for a...

graibeard It's an ex-tank squire 11 4 Very Happy Frontyard garden
Gone to meet its maker, and now resurrected as 5 raised garden beds. The base had rotted out and yet the walls were still perfectly fine. What to do with it besides a garden ornament, a rustic replacement for the usual wagon wheel? Recycle it into rings approx 300mm (1’) high, fill them wi...

TropicanaRoses Final Pic of Canning Closet 2 12 Very Happy
I will be canning more baked beans, but this is a pic of the closet after the final spaghetti sauce canning. I think we may have enough spaghetti sauce to make it through the beginning of the year!! :) For whatever reason, I can’t get the whole shelving unit in the picture on folia, so the...

graibeard Captain Obvious whispers - 'turn them sideways dopey!' 12
Sometimes the obvious takes a while. I’ve had these offcuts of 50mm mesh hanging around for a while, years in fact. They were leftovers reclaimed from some job that I can’t recall now, it was that long ago.. I’ve used them previously to cover seedlings from birds, cats and other...

graibeard Comfrey (Bocking14): flourishing 9 Very Happy Comfrey (Bocking 14) , Southern garden , and Central East garden
Morning SneIrish :) The comfreys are doing exceptionally well, so well in fact I may have to cut them back sooner rather than later. Squeals of delight, quickly dropping to a bassy, throaty “and so they should be anyway”. Yeah, and about time – huck, spit. The photos don’...

Hi there, I’m new :) I saw you can do seed swaps on folia, and i was just wondering how many seeds to you send to someone for a swap? I’m a newbie gardener so I don’t even really know how many seeds someone uses to plant something with really, so this is why I’m asking! An...

graibeard Aurora Bluetail Damselfly - Ischnura aurora 7 Flies , Azolla , and Critters garden
Saw this little beasty yesterday on the Red Azolla in the bog area – actually in the new pots that are replacing the bog area. It’s wings looked misshapen but that may have been the light playing tricks, and it was constantly moving its tail – with the fascinating blue bead on i...

jasonga Ok snails, this means war 7 Unhappy Vegetable garden and Basil (D1-2) Dying
Alas, it seems the snails in my backyard are getting a little too confident – they’ve eaten all the basil. One or two plants? Sure, we can share. All of them? Now you’re just getting greedy!

cristina rose hip jam 3 4 Happy dog rose and Native meadow and hedgerow garden
After cold days, with night temperatures below 0° C, the weather is now warm and sunny. It’s ideal for strolling in the meadows and along the country paths, bordered with dog rose shrubs. During a walk, I’ve collected a basket of hips, set on preparing jam. Once in the kitchen, I̵...

    Motherhen Portulaca 6 Portulaca
Does anyone know what could be wrong with my Portulica? It used to be in the ‘Chucks Front Door’ garden, but it is not frost hardy so I brought it inside. Before I lifted it I noticed that it was a little bit wilted and I thought perhaps a chicken had sat on it. However, it has been...

    TropicanaRoses Itchy Bumps!!? 6 Happy
After planting all of the things that janietta sent me today, I noticed that my right arm is breaking out in a bunch of hard itchy bumps! Not ugly. Just looks like a rash, but a little bit annoying. Not sure where I got it from. All that is around my mailbox is grass, no exceptions. Elm don&...

Mezneil From garden to plate (with added protein). 5 Broccoli 'Gambler's' and Veggie Abundance garden
Our broccoli is starting to crop as fast as I can harvest it. I have to be out there picking before dinner every night really or it gets away from me. I’ve blanched and frozen three sandwich-sized bags of florets in the last few days. It feels good to be storing food away again. We had fr...

Tonya My waterlily has flowered! 5 Very Happy Water lily red Flowering and Water bowl garden
It is more a soft pink than a red, but I love this flower. Because of the cold weather, I haven’t been able to get one of these to flower before, so i am really happy with this one. Will have to wait and see if any of my other waterlilies flower.
