Different types of decorative kales seem to be used pretty extensively in winter plantings (alongside pansies and a few other plants) in Charleston – they were new to me before I moved here – but almost everyone dead-heads the kales as soon as they start forming buds. I think that they’re really missing out on a fun stage of their growth! You can click on the planting to see what it looked like earlier in the season, in its “appropriate” decorative stage. :)
