A Busy Planting Day
Sunday, 20 Feb 11 Sunny -12°C / 10°F
Today’s sowings totaled 49 cells (probably 12-15 types of plants) and were mostly perennials and herbs, including my poor parsley: I’ve got it soaking overnight now and I will remember to leach the seeds tomorrow and plant them on Tuesday!
We had a great thaw on Friday (it was 9 or 10 degrees) then back down to -14 yesterday. However the upside is that much of the driveway is now down to gravel again and I can seed the outline of the pond border garden. (photo 1) I peeked in at the spinach (photo 5) and lettuce plants in the cold frame and they seem to be holding up well. Unfortunately they didn’t germinate super well, so I don’t have as many plants as last year, but it does leave some room to fill things in: along with my perennials & herbs I also started 2 kale plants which I hope I may get into the ground in the cold frame in a few weeks.
After trying unsuccessfully two years ago, today I planted 3 of my 6 remaining Staphlea trifolia seeds. l plan to take them out to the coldframe tomorrow so that they can get their cold treatment and hopefully germinate. It’s a native tree (I think) and I’d really like to get at least one seedling.
It feels great to be sowing seeds, even if spring is still a ways away. My self watering planter which got stuck outside this fall (the gardener forgot to bring it in, then it got really rainy & super heavy and she said it was too challenging ;) was thawed enough on Friday that I was able to tip some water out of it and bring it inside. I’ve been taking it in and out all weekend to dump the water. [There’s a large water reservoir at the bottom of the pot, and a hole at either end which lets excess water out.] It is still mighty cold, but the thyme and the chives appear to still be alive, so I’m hoping to transplant them to dryer soil sometime this week. If I had a tray which would fit under the whole planter I’d keep it intact, but I think it would be a recipe for disaster, particularly with hardwood floors, it would only be a matter of time until the water overflowed.
I’m trying a bit of propagating with my houseplants including upright leaf cuttings for the prayer plant. (Photos 2-4).
