That’s most of the tomatoes now up, although no signs yet from the eggplant or peppers. It’s been less than a week, so no worry has set in yet. Peppers in under a week, even with the heat mat, would be a little much to expect, no?
To see a list of the tomatoes that made their appearances today, scroll down. Tomatoes still not up, are:
- Pink Zebra
- San Francisco Fog
- Lattanzio Pendulous
- Garten Freude
- Fryerfrinsborghese
- Uncle Charlie’s
- Teton de Venus
- Sophie’s Choice (however this went in only a few days ago)

Kelly – are you sowing multiples of each variety of tomato? I assume you grow this many varieties for your seed bank – but just curious as to your process with regard to number of seeds sown and how much room you have for planting them.

I do sow multiples – mostly because I can’t help myself, but also because it gives me room to big out the biggest & healthiest seedlings for growing. It also allows me to give away some plants during spring, and that’s always a big hit. I generally sow 3-4 seeds of each variety, pick out one, and then separate the others and pot up.

my husband asked me to grow extra tomato plants this year – he wants to use them for barter!

Haha – barter for what?

well, there’s a guy on the island that makes his own biodiesel and hard cider – my husband is restoring a 1979 diesel Land Cruiser, plus he has a particular fondness for hard cider… Another friend has oysters on his beach and loves to grow his own veggies – but doesn’t always get around to sowing his seeds in time. Sounds like a fair trade – eh?
