Let the season begin!

Sunday was the day for me to start all my seedlings. It just happened to coincide with the twitter event #supersowsunday (apparently co-ordinated to take place at the same time as something called a…. super bowl? Anybody ever heard of it?).

After a weekend of running around and getting my supplies (and going back out and running back around since I had gotten the wrong kind of damned light originally), I finally plopped down and got the solanums started – all the peppers, tomatoes, and I’ve even ventured into the realm of eggplants for the first time (as I am a very, very recent eggplant convert).

‘Rosa Bianca’ seemed like a good eggplant to start out with because it’s not supposed to be too… you know, eggplanty.

The set up looks a little sparse and small right now – but it always does when I first start out.

Believe it or not I’m actually about a week late because of my new zone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still chilly here, and in fact we actually had a frost last night (that’s under 10 since “winter” started), but for the first time in years I’ve actually not started my seeds too early, and it’s because I’m still adjusting to this new zone and long growing season.

I also finally got myself a heat mat, which I’ve been saying I’m going to do for the last five years. The solanums should come up nice and strong with the extra heat – it’s amazing how much warmer the soil feels. I’m hoping time will tell it was a smart purchase, and the peppers will come up faster than their normal three weeks.

To see a list of what I started, scroll down.

I’m really, really excited about this year. While I have a host of problems this climate will present me with (I’ve been warned about blight endlessly) the extended season has gotten me really, really excited. No more droughts or water rationing, no more sun so hot that all my tomatoes drop their blossoms.

Let the season begin!

Sounds great! I think Victoria probably has one of the longest growing seasons you can get while still living in Canada. I bought a heat mat two years ago and it’s great. I only have the one, so I just use it to help the seeds germinate, and then I move them off of it to make room for the next flat. My nightshades usually come up in about 5-8 days on it. Good luck!

Good to know about the Rosa Biancas, because I think I took a couple of seeds from the big swap going around.

Super bowl?? What’s that?? :D Actually, I don’t take part in the football festivities (gasp!!!) :D I just can’t get into football, neither my dad nor my grandpa were all that interested in it, so, since the hubby isn’t, I guess there was no reason to be. :) (I like volleyball, and guess where I landed?? The volleyball state.) I have never seen a state so devoted to their volleyball team! :)

Anyway, I have not started anything just yet, probably about 2 weeks out for me, but it is soooooo exciting! And swapping is making my garden itch much worse! Can’t wait to scratch it. :)

So happy for you! Hope that you have great germination, and that your plants grow strong, and produce much yumminess. :D

No Wapsipinicon Peach?! Gasp! No, seriously, looks great. I’ve been thinking about a heating pad, since my peppers are at 13 days and most haven’t sprouted yet, but that will have to wait for a future year. I’ll be interested to hear how much of a difference it makes for you. What turned you into an eggplant convert? I love “Super Sow Sunday”! I’d never heard about it until I read this post, but I did a ton of sowing on Sunday so apparently my subconscious was tuned in. :)

I meant to start seeds Sunday but life got in the way. With any luck, I can get a bunch started when I get off work (I work graveyard shift, so my “evening” starts at 8am). In lieu of a seed warming pad, I’m going to stick the seed tray on top of the fridge, where it’s nice & warm already. And maybe the cats will leave the bits of green alone when they start poking up; I started a Chia cat grass planter for them a few days ago, in the hopes that if they have their own greens to munch on, they will leave MY greenery alone.
