Can’t help unfortunately – I assume there are no more photos, even blurred ones that might outline the shape from other angles? I’m guessing the head is on the right end and that’s two claws in the air. Those two large dots are on its abdomen and that’s not a head turned to the left looking at us?
An intriguing little critter either way. :-)
A site I use with great success is the Brisbane Insects and Spiders Home Page. Pay no attention to the Brisbane bit, I’ve found a lot of Melbourne bugs within the site.

Your assumptions are correct graibeard , head on right two claws – which had what appeared to be a single stinger on the end of them, dots on abdomen,
ive also added another photo with the bug approaching head on.
it certainly has me curious.

I’ll take a WAG that it’s a stage (instar) in the development of an Assassin Bug. Check out the various Instars for the Common Assassin Bug and then with a liberal dose of imagination, and an extra long drag on the weed if required, apply your (now) well primed imagination on the Small Red Assassin Bug
Dude! works for me… :-)
