Is yours that raspberry color I see here? Mine is much more red than your photo is for me, and the edge is more gold than white. Fascinating to see it in someone else’s yard, if only as a photo. Spouse picked this one out and it took at least three years to settle in, get bigger, and start blooming well. The person we bought it from said it’s just slow to establish. Was that your experience, also?

@ TolCath: The main photo for this planting is more the way you describe yours. This year the blooms in that garden seem a little less spectacular than other years – and I’m not exactly sure why that is. It too was slow to establish as yours was.

Good to know my advisor was reliable. :) I just realized today that I don’t know where my Startle is after it was moved for the path, so I hope it blooms recognizably — and soon. The one I thought was it turned out to be Elegant Candy.

Looking forward to seeing more of your blooms. :)

Could it be time to divide or fertilize?

@ Tolcath: We are fertilizing – as we always do…..and this is only it’s second year blooming so I can’t imagine that it would need dividing yet….but the entire daylily bed has been a bit of a disappointment this year. Maybe too much rain early in the season? I don’t really know. Quite baffling!

Well — that’s gardening for you. At least, I often find myself baffled!

I believe all the rain and coolness here has had an effect on the flowers: many of them are showing water damage (streaking, spotting, thinning on the petals) and I’ve had a few more deformed blossoms than usual. The colors are showing darker — cool weather colors for those that react that way (except that Decatur Apricot and Sweet Obsession are wearing their hot weather colors). Makes it harder to recognize them if they aren’t blooming the shade I’m used to seeing.

I’m not sure what causes the deformities, actually. Maybe it’s random.
