5 hours in the garden...

and a lot was accomplished! Emily and Sam even helped.

  • We loosened the soil in the entire garden (a huge job!).
  • Fertilized the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini (with bone meal).
  • Fertilized the basil and parsley (with blood meal).
  • Transplanted the sage and dill out to the garden.
  • Transplanted the thyme into its own little pot.
  • Transplanted the basil into a temporary pot (I forgot I had this in the container with the other herbs – I’ll give it to my coworker who wanted a basil plant).
  • Mulched the whole garden with straw (covers the soaker hose and will indicate for the kids where it’s safe to walk)
  • Harvested a few strawberries, which the kids ate.
  • Kevin planted more green beans where the cucumbers didn’t come up.
  • Sowed the “Annual Flower Mix” seeds in a container.
  • Sprayed the green beans, peppers, basil, tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini with the insecticidal soap (which is working wonderfully! Hardly a nibble on the bean plants anymore!)

I sweat so much I lost 5 pounds! And then I got rained on. It felt so great, it was the perfect cool-off.

Now we’ll just admire our work for a few days. We could see a few of the green bean seeds that I planted last weekend starting to poke through. Once they do, I’ll need to spray them before the bugs find them.

I get in pretty decent shape during summer just from hauling stuff around and sweating in the garden daily. I think it’s a great exercise plan!
