I haven’t been keeping up with journal stuff since I’ve had a couple of lowdown days. Usually that’s the best time for me to spend gardening because it cheers me up to be productive but it’s been blasted hot and we have air quality warnings through tonight so it’s been in my best interest to stay out of it.
We ventured out to the community gardens yesterday in the hot, hot sun and those potatoes we just hilled 7 days ago have shot up another 18 inches and I can’t decide if it’s worth hilling them again or just let them stand as they are and hope they are gearing up to make tubers sooner rather than later. The soil temps aren’t too bad yet, but we’ve got a short window of opportunity on potatoes in the Southern spring.
The corn seems to be coming along, and the 5th sweet potato that didn’t look like it’d make it has bounced back and is putting on new growth. We spent ages weeding everything and without a doubt when we stop by on Sunday it will need more weeding. I can’t wait for some of the vines to get going and crowd out the weeds. I planted a melon ‘Charantais’ and squash between the corn rows in hopes that they’ll get on the case of that. Well.. the melon anyway.
I’ve decided to let 2 of the morning glory volunteers in the end decorative and companion beds stay and make a go of it. I also transplanted some basil ‘Red Rubin’ and nasturtiums into the ends between the transplanted marigolds and newly sprouting borage & nigella.

You ain’t kidding on the heat. It feels more like JUL then MAY. I’m watering my container veggies every day right now. Good luck with the plot.

It’s supposed to cool down by tomorrow night but be so windy that we’re under fire watch with low humidity and no rain for a week or more. I’m almost missing the extreme rains of last spring.

your potatoes look GREAT! I can’t wait to watch the progression on these! Lady bug photo was neat. I think we need to get some ladybugs too for the aphids…plus they are as cute as buttons. I did make an organic solution made with around 3 cups of hot tap water, 2 big whole sprigs of cat mint, around 4 very large cloves of garlic, chopped up, about 10 small drops of dish soap (non moisturizing type) and around 20 drops of Dr. Bronners Peppermint Pure Castille soap. I shook it up and let it sit for a day then strained the liquid into my spray bottle, which has stream and mist.
I tell you it WORKS. The streaming part slams them off the stems and leaves…the misting part covers the entire plant, does ZERO damage provided i do it early morning or late afternoon so the sun doesn’t fry it, and i don’t think aphids like mint and garlic because the problem has seriously waned since i have been doing this every day…or every other day even.
and the yard smells like an italian restaurant for like 15 minutes….heh heh. i worried at first if the lettuces would taste garlicky or even soapy….but nope…..all is well. :o)
