2 Thumbs Up!

The bees are cheesed off, and I'm hot under the collar too.

Thursday, 08 May 08

The paving arrived today, and I can put it off no longer. It is time that I tackled the non-lawn. I am hoping that by doing this whilst the mining bees are active, that they will be able to start mining elsewhere if they choose, and salvage something from their brief active season. I’m also making a point of placing the circle in as much as I can away from my back door step, where most of the bees are, and over the most mossy part of the lawn instead.

All the same I have to shift a lot of earth around to level the yard up properly, so disturbance is inevitable :-(

I’m also going to lay the paving down on a sub strait of tamped down hardcore and sand, rather than concrete it in. I want water to be able to filter between the slabs and nourish the soil. If I leave a big enough gap between the slabs, perhaps the bees will stay and take up residence between them too.

Of course, I choose the hottest day of the year so far to go and dig up most of my garden. What kind of idiot am I?

One that hurts a lot, that’s what.

Ow.

Oh dear, looks like I left it too late to photograph the bees as they were… just too busy :-(

Looks like you’ve been slaving away!

Well, hopefully there will be photo opportunities next year. I made a point of not disturbing the burrows by my back door. Assuming that the eggs are laid with enough pollen in those burrows, there will be bees next season.

Wow! That’s a serious amount of landscaping, Happibun!
I spent most of Sunday digging and constructing raised veggie beds so I’m aching too – I think we need lots of chocolate – that always helps! ;-) Fortunately it was nowhere near as hot in the extreme south west over the weekend (the visitors weren’t very happy about that but it suited me …)

I love the idea of chocolate, basically any excuse will do, though I’d rather be able to do the chocolate bit without the pain…

It has got even hotter over the weekend, and I had to limit my digging activities to an hour or two in the evening. The hole’s still not finished, at a radius of 1.20 meters, it needs to be 30cm deep to take a layer of hardcore and sand. According to my calculations, that means I’ve got to shift about 1.5 cubic meters of soil, which sounds like nothing much. So either my maths is totally wrong (very likely), or I am very unfit (also likely), or 1.5 meters cubed is really quite a lot.

    Phew!
