Spinach
I’ve got about a third one of my large planter boxes (9″×37″ planting space) devoted to spinach. My plan is to plant 32 (4×8) each week so that I can have a continuous supply of spinach for use in salads. I also plan to compare these sown outside to the 20 I started inside and will be transplanting outside shortly.
I did have a bit of a hard time spacing these 1" apart. I ended up marking the inches with toothpicks and then using another toothpick to poke the little seedling holes, then covering the hole gently. Hopefully it worked, since I tried my best to plant these only 1/2" deep.
My indoors started spinach sprouted in 6 days, but since these are in a slightly shadier part of my deck I don’t think these’ll pop up quite as quick.
Onions
I found a great site that has gardening resources specific to my area, which told me that since Everett is so mild I can plant onions until June. So I modified my onion plan to do one batch a week for 6 weeks, and then after harvest I’ll plant celery in the newly open spaces.
As with the spinach, I had a bit of a hard time planting these only 1" apart. You can see my little toothpick markers in the photo, but I think they worked out nicely and will probably continue working with them.
I also just realized that the white onions will mature a week later than the purple onions (after planting these, of course) so I’m not sure if I need to revise my planting plan to accommodate that but I think I’ll just wing it.
Carrots
I have 3 types of carrots picked out. The square planter I’d originally planned on putting carrots in has fairly sloped sides so I think this cedar barrel style planter will work a lot better. This is week 1 of a 4 week rotation.
The “Nantes Half Long” is my longest, most normal variety. The “Little Finger” is my sweetest variety, and also the smallest at 3.5" long
I am hoping that these are the most simple to grow of the veggies in my garden. I’ve put them in a nice sunny-ish spot (about 3-4 hours of sun a day, I think). The carrots are the only plant that I have to thin out, and I’m not sure what people do with the plants they remove. Does anyone know if you can eat carrot greens as a salad? What do you use your thinning for?
