Cutting back iris leaves?
I’ve heard that iris leaves should be cut back at some point each year, but gotten different answers as to when, and no answers as to why. One person suggested cutting back twice: once each in mid-summer and late full. Another person suggested cutting back once in mid-fall. No one has been able to tell me why this should be done, just that “that’s what you do with irises.” Any ideas?

I cut mine back in the fall (late October/ early November) to a fan about 6" high. Usually the leaves are beginning to look a bit tatty and it is part of the clear-up to prevent rotting leaves and the general mess that is created by and under the snow.

You do not say which iris your are growing. Assuming they are the flag iris, one reason for cutting the leaves back is to allow the sun to get to the rhizomes to give them the good baking that they like. Another possible reason is to prevent strong winds causing the plants to rock, this is more likely to be a problem with recently planted iris.

I never cut back fresh healthy leaves. I do cut off the brown, dead ones and maybe the brown tips if there are any, usually in late fall. I have to admit that sometimes it doesn’t get done until early spring. Mine grow beautifully either way.
