Everything left is in bloom, even the magnolia has put out fuzzy buds. Iris, coreopsis (!), wild campanula, nasturtium, hyssop. The yard is a confusing mash of summer and autumn color, golden leaves on red roses, juicy raspberries on dying canes. It's a bittersweet time; I could have left all the plants I removed last week, but how can you know. Last year the ground had frozen by this date and I lost the last of my turnips and beets. This year I mulched them heavily in straw and they're toasty and thriving.
