Paraphrasing a conversation I had with my wife a bit earlier...

Me: You know that rhubarb that was dead and I pulled up in April?
Wife: Yes
Me: And you know that rhubarb that I threw onto the rubbish heap in the back corner?
Wife: Yes
Me: And you know that rhubarb that's now growing in the rubbish heap?
Wife: Ye... wait, what?

Sure enough, while dumping some weeds on the rubbish heap in the back of the garden (it's not really a compost heap - maybe one day I'll actually turn it into one), I discovered that one of the rhubarb plants I had dug out in winter had decided to start growing again! So I've now transplanted it back into the garden (meaning we will have three rhubarb plants if they all survive). I have no idea if it will survive the move or not, but since I haven't managed to kill it through years of neglect and ripping it out without any care, I'd say the odds are 50/50 :-)

Speaking of rhubarb, it was fairly obvious this afternoon why the new plants are being eaten. We had some rain this morning, and when I went out at lunch time to check out the garden I found around 15 (large) snails all in the rhubarb area! They obviously make their home in the lavender bush (the rhubarb plants are right next to the lavender). Those particular snails won't be troubling my plants any more, but I fear to think how many more are hiding under there.
