8.16am Well, here it is, an icing of wet snow over the garden, hanging off the roofs like a tablecloth, and big puddles on the road. Although the weather station says 'light rain', it looks pretty much like snow to me, perhaps mixed with rain. If you don't hear the same squeals of joy as my grandson made as he careered around the lawn making a large wet snowball before breakfast, then maybe it is because the snow beat me to it in the garden although I did buy some more hessian and some plastic net wrap yesterday. The juniper by the porch will need wrapping and I thought that the plastic wrap would be less of an eyesore than the hessian, it will still allow the colour of the needles to show through.

It went on snowing well into mid-afternoon although the accumulation was no more than a thin layer of slush. Dripping and the slap of wet snow sliding off the roof. I put on my old rain jacket, rain pants and wellies and went out to tie up the PG Hydrangea which was bowed down under that small amount of snow. The tall Michaelmas Daisies are completely flopped over and the clump at the end of Porch had most of their flower snapped off so I rescued what I could and they are looking very lush in the weed pot. My hands pretty quickly got very cold handling snowy branches.

Later in the day, when I came back from buying milk I did some more tying up. The juniper is now wrapt in netting; R. Alchemyst has its loose stems tied back to the fence. The Yellow Philadephus is tied up, as is R. Alta but it needs more protection as the shoots this year were almost over the drip-line; R. Sunrise is also tied back, some top twigs were already broken and need to be cut off. Hydrangea 'Brussel's Lace' is trussed up as is Berberis 'Rosy Glow' surrounded by tiny red berries which fell off as I wrestled with prickly branches and string, this time in my best rainjacket and rain pants. There is quite a lot more to do but not today. Tomorrow has only 60% of snow and Wednesday is forecast as cloudy with no precipitation so that is my window of opportunity. The rest of the week is rain and/or snow.

Photos: Berberis 'Concorde'; Michaelmas Daisies 'Prof. Kippenburg'; looking from the porch south; the PG Hydrangea bowed under the slush; the Dwarf Alberta Spruce looking Christmassy, and yes the local stores are beginning to put their Christmas stock out - yuk.
