  <description>The poor thing never did well, and this summer's heat did it in. When I dug it out, the roots were all bound up, I don't think there was any soil at all in the root ball. Either some really bad landscapers did the planting, or the last owner had no idea. I suspect the former. Most of azaleas that were in the garden when I moved in have also died, with the same problem. Let that be a lesson...

Loosened up the soil all around the area as well as I could without hitting other plants, and stirred in a few shovel loads of good wormy compost and soaked the bed down really well. I'll probably stir and soak it once more before adding the artichoke that I bought to go in its place.</description>
