3 2009-09-13T07:29:57+10:00 false I removed the dragon's tongue beans from the backyard garden. I planted them on July 5, and left them on the plants to mature to the shelly stage. I've never had shelly beans of any kind, so I thought I'd try it. I harvested all the beans today and shelled them. I'll cook them tonight. I'm a bit disappointed. I ended up a with enough beans for 2-3 meals, which doesn't seem like much of a yield for something that has occupied the garden for 2 months. Even tomato plants yield more food than that. After removing all the beans, I dug up the area where the beans had been to bury the plant remains, and got a scare -- I found 5 gross little glutinous globby things. Hideous little wriggly things. I've never seen a Japanese Beetle grub before, but I was certain that's what I was looking at, so I squished them. I checked, and I was sadly right. When I filled in the hole, I sifted the dirt carefully and found 2 more of them. I hope this doesn't become an infestation next year. I need to remember to check under the tomato plant for more of them when I remove it. I also planted a LOT of seeds. I planted more greens in all my beds. Based on last year's experience, I expect that they'll all grow to about medium sized, but then I'll be able to hold them under a row cover until I harvest them. Among other things, I planted some lettuce seeds. I love lettuce. I usually try to avoid it because I'm allergic to it, but I got some seeds as a gift, and I couldn't resist. I planted 4 seeds, so at the most I'll have just 4 plants out a hundred or so other salad plants, so I'm not terribly worried.
