Today the attention was on the Corner Garden and getting it cleaned up for fall. And, boy, did it need it! Because of the weather pattern this year, cool and rainy through July and then hot and humid, the gardens have been overgrown with weeds and not enough time to keep them under control. There were tall grasses growing all over the front of Corner. These had to come from the seed in the bird feeder, because they are not anything that has been growing around here. At least they had shallow roots and pulled out easily. There was also lots of clover, a few clumps of crabgrass and other odds and ends of weeds. It took me about two hours to clean it all out. There were a few sunflowers that were spent and I pulled those out too.

The Veronica had grown quite tall, and apparently likes the moist conditions here. I had originally planted it in front, but that wasn’t good. I moved it just around the corner to the side. The Yarrow was done, dried and brown mostly, so that got cut back severely. Of course, there is new growth underneath all that brown crunchy stuff and now that is in the open. I also cut back the Coreopsis which was just about done. There was new growth showing there too. The perennial Geranium that I planted at the front gateway corner not too long ago has perked up and has grown a few new leaves. That was uncertain when I planted it as it was mostly roots and dead foliage, but I guess the roots were healthy. There are two small but healthy stalks of the perennial Snapdragons, and hopefully they will survive the winter. The Crocosmia are done, but I left the seeds on the stalks for the birds. The orange Daylily is done, but there is a bud on the small Stella D’oro. The Nasturtiums are gone, not a trace.
