0 2009-08-14T18:50:18+10:00 false I pulled up my first-ever potatoes tonight. I got two pounds from a square foot of French Fingerlings potatoes. That's not counting the ones I snuck out from under a few at a time. I had company for dinner and cooked them all at once; they were great. I'll make the leftovers into potato pancakes tomorrow. This year I just planted and let them grow. Next year I will (a) start earlier and (b) try "building up" an extra layer of bed in a corner just for the potatoes, heaping soil around the stems as they grow. Also tonight: 1 brandywine, a couple of green brandywines, a few red figs, and another handful of green beans. Also served up all the green beans picked this week for dinner, but forgot to slice up the tomatoes. I'm not sure if it was absent-mindedness or just a greedy reluctance to share them. I hope it was absent-minded, because in a week or two I will have more ripe tomatoes than I can eat. No German striped yet. I think it has set fruit but it is so intertwined with the Brandywines I won't know what I have until they have ripened. Also, pulled up the third of 4 Derby Day cabbages. This one had so much insect damage going all the way to the heart, with nasty slimy stuff around the holes, that I had to toss it out.
