In 2009 used half-half mix of coconut pith and rabbit manure, amended with pelleted 7-5-7 fertilizer, MycoGrow, chelated iron and ag lime (in 2008 used commercial Local Hero Mix from American Soil Products similarly amended). Tomato was about a foot and a half tall with lush foliage. Stripped all but the top clusters of leaves. We may have broken the tomato stem during planting process.
In future, try growing tomatoes for upside-down planters in half-gallon pots, let get somewhat rootbound and strip of all but terminal leaves before transplant.
