Today Kerry and I went out and killed weeds like snakes. There were a lot of dandelions and henbit (or whatever that minty thing is that looks like henbit). Some mustards too. We noticed that our neighbors had a lot more mustards than we did. Everything was flowering. Next year we are definitely going with another cover crop. Kerry wants to try fava beans. Yay for nodules! We claimed some straw for keeping the weeds down.

Some things survived from last year:
* Chamomile: lovely plant, easy to grow, tasty tea, seeds itself EVERYWHERE. We pulled up a lot of these. This year we will probably want to just pull up the plants when they start to flower and take the whole plant home to dry.
* Thyme: Hooray! Who doesn't love thyme?
* Beebalm: Double yay!
* Larkspurs
* Sage
* Strawberries: Despite mostly being covered by the new back path, a few of our strawberries survived. Kerry says we're supposed to pick off the first flowers to get better yields this year.

Also, a giant ant pile had taken up residence under the weed cover at the back of the garden. I hoed it out of sheer meanness. Though I suppose they could stay and provide us some protection from caterpillars. They do keep their mound weed-free.
