Now that warm weather really seems to be here and everything is coming up, it looks like I did suffer a few loses this winter. I'm saddest about the beautiful dark purple hellebore, but I guess I should have tried harder to find the right spot for it.

I lost two small hydrangeas and have one in critical condition. 'Masja' arrived tiny and I planted it, where it failed to thrive. Dug it up and potted it up and it did okay. It was a victim of an April frost, just starting to leaf out and then the frost hit. I really should have brought it inside, but it was just not a happy plant already. 'Forever and Ever Red' also never really thrived last year. It was one of the bargin group I got at Lowes that were pretty dried out and I don't think I ever got the root ball really fully hydrated. This one never even tried to come back. The larger 'Merritt's Supreme', also part of the hydrangea haul, is on the critical list, with just a tiny bit of green showing. Another whose rootball never seemed to want to fully hydrate, I'm trying to soak it regularly, soaking once, then coming back and soaking it again 10-15 minutes later.

The biggest surprise loss is not actually in this garden, but in the backyard garden and that is the potted mini hosta 'Golden Prayers'. It seemed quite healthy last year and the roots seemed green earlier in the spring, but now it looks dead, though the soil in the pot never seemed overly dry. I also lost hosta 'Orange Marmalade' which I think was a victim of poor placement on my part and simply had too much root competition. I may repurchase this hosta and try growing it in a pot for a few years.
