After a pretty difficult winter, Joe is making a great comeback. You see, it's not an entirely easy task transporting a large terra-cotta pot (about 11 inches in diameter) containing a one and a half year old coffee plant that stands a little over 12 inches back home over winter break with all your other junk, two other jade plants, and three small pots of basil without causing some damage. My friend who gave me a ride home had us stopped at his girlfriend's place for a couple of hours and my coffee plant had to sit outside, in the car, with no heat, and in the middle of winter. Immediately, the newest growth began to shrivel up and die from the cold. When I finally got it home, I pruned off those two dead leaves and tried to keep it warm. On top of that, our landlord back home, in an attempt to save money, raised our gas bill and lowered the heat in the house. The thermometer that I have in my dorm room that reads 76ºF now, read anywhere between 56º-64ºF in my house. Yeah, not very coffee plant friendly weather. To add to it all, my curious feline back home likes to eat just about any plant I bring home, so Joe suffered a few chewed up leaves. Needless to say, since I brought Joe back up here to my dorm room, he has been growing well and has been preparing for the spring! He's doing a lot better and his bright, shiny green new growth makes up for his darker, dull green old growth.
