The weather is bitterly cold and has been since Christmas, but no snow.Of course compared to the U.S. and Canada it's probably quite mild, but not to us! There are things I wonder can survive if we have much more of this, like the kangaroo apple and the bird of paradise plants.Yet there are primulas in flower in a sheltered spot under the bush fuchsia and the snowdrops are in bud.I've just been out to pour hot water on the chunk of ice in the birdbath and I see the thermometer is on-2C.It hasn't managed to get above freezing today.Even the sweetpea seedlings in the cold frame are looking a bit chilled, and usually sweetpeas seem impervious to the temperature.Spring seems awfully far away.
