Who are you?.... And where did you come from?

While out watering last evening I found these sprouted in the garden. Much to my suprise… right smack in the middle of my Vulcan Swiss Chard. This morning I pulled it all out. Seems to be either squash/cukes/melons and some sort of grain/grass.

The real mystery is what/who buried it there? Some little animal found a score of seeds and put them away for safe keeping. Hehee, fertile garden soil was not a good spot for safe keeping. My suspicion is a chipmunk. There are a number of them living in my neighbor’s firewood pile. Won’t it be surprised when it comes back for it’s seeds?

I wish I had time for the squash/cukes/melons to do their things. But alas, it’s only 49 days until frost… and my swiss chard and spinach would NOT appreciate the company.

I sometimes find the strangest things growing in my container garden too. We have birds who bring in seeds and buds from elsewhere and promptly discard them in my garden. :P

This was like the probably-tomatoes I found growing where I wanted garbanzos to come up. I mean, lots and lots of volunteer tomatoes, but yeah, too late in the season to do anything with them.

Now you have me wondering what’s going to show up where the chipmunks keep digging among my beets.

Just as a follow up, today when I went out to do my morning check, the same spot was dug up, all the way to the bottom of the container. Whatever put them there, came back!

Now you have me wondering if chipmunks are gardeners who sprout things on purpose, or if they showed up looking for seeds and dug to the bottom and were disappointed.

I wish we got chipmunks here. They’re so cute.

Possums are kind of similar, but all I hear of them are loud rattlings along the roof.
