The chives seem happier since the zucchini came out and they are no longer shaded. Still… they are not doing fantastic. None cut yet… been sitting all summer.

I’ve always been chives-impaired. People talk about how they grow like crazy and bloom and reseed – I consider myself lucky if they don’t die.

Me too! I have noticed though that when I have cut them they grow back thicker and more vigourously (for what it’s worth)…

What Verthandei said. I had wimpy chives all year this year until I started giving them a haircut every time I wanted to make a salad. They’re a bit bushier and they’re growing much faster.

Should I cut all of the legs on one plant at a time? Or just a few on each plant? I’m grilling some taters tonight… they’ll be just perfect.

My plants were so spindly when I started the process that I just lopped off the entire plant 1-2 inches from the ground. And I’d keep clipping plants until I had as much chive as I wanted or I ran out of plants to clip.

Yup, me too, cut them all off one plant at a time maybe an inch above the ground.

Thanks! I’ll do that during kiddo-down time today to prep for dinner and get them going hopefully!
