I could never get squash to grow in California. Neither could my mom, or my sister, who are much better gardeners than me. I think they just don’t like it there, although I’m not sure what you’d do to create some sort of micro-climate they would like. Maybe they like some humidity?

I could totally arrange some humidity somehow, maybe by covering (partially) a dedicated bin with a clear lid and then putting shallow pans of water in there. OOOh! Or maybe one of those misting systems you see nowadays at theme parks in hot climates. Provided it didn’t actually steam the plants because of the high temperatures likely to be obtained in such an environment. :) (I wonder how much those cost?)

I’m not saying humidity is the answer; it could just be an invitation to fungal disaster. I’m just trying to think of climate differences between New York and California. Another option is acidity. I don’t know about water Northern California, but having watered my plants with Southern California pure alkaline most of my life, that’s the other thing I can point to as an obvious difference.

You know, I worry about my blueberry for just that reason. (Though I have no idea of the pH of the tap water here. I have been meaning to get a pH meter for some time…) (I do give my blueberry “acid-loving-plant food”. When I think of it.)
Fungal disaster – sounds like the tagline for next summer’s big blockbuster. In my garden. Heh.

In a way I’m sort of relieved for you. It was such a monster for me, I would have hated for it to take over your balcony.

Dude! That’s so not fair! I want giant mutant squash to take over my balcony (and oh, the world too). :)
In a sort of related way, my sister has some neighbors down the street that their kid one year wanted a pumpkin patch in the front yard. Parents said “cool, we hate mowing that grass anyway”. Now they have a pumpkin patch every year as a front yard. Tons of pumpkins. I hear it’s a big hit at Halloween. :)

It would be so much fun to have a giant pumpkin patch in my front yard! My neighbors would hate it though. They’d probably use the pumpkins as missiles and launch them through my windows. They lack imagination about front yards.

My neighbors are split on my squash patch. The cool neighbor loves it, and he loves the garden, and every time we see him he tells us how excited he is to watch the plants grow. The boring neighbor hates it, and actually built a fence because they couldn’t stand to see the squash patch anymore. But seeing as he’s gone and built a fence now, we’re going to have a squash patch there next year. Neener neener neener.

Built a fence so that he wouldn’t have to look at squash? Wow. Some people need to get a teeny bit of perspective.
(I can’t wait until I have a squash patch someday.)

Fungal Disaster – great name for a slash band!
Sorry your lemon squash hasn’t grown. :( I have it as a maybe for next year… but I can’t decide.
Cmangus… the neighbor’s fence will be the PERFECT location for the squash patch. ;) What person can’t bear to watch a plant grow?

I think their problem with it is that it has big, tall, flat leaves, instead of short, narrow leaves that are exactly 2 inches high. Not to mention that it has fruit, which is a big, round yellow thing instead of a narrow green thing that is exactly 2 inches high.
