Harvesting: Sugar Snap Pea, just not by me :(
The moose came today. Ate my fireweed, sniffed out my garden and munched on some some sugar snap peas. Crazy yelling and a well-thrown tape measurer shooed them away.

Hi Mcav0y,
Did you notice that the moose’s right hind leg is missing a hoof? It looks like a youngster? Do you have a high fence, like the bit I see in the background of the pic, all around your garden?

I did notice that, but she seemed to be hopping around just fine. There were two of them, and I think that this was the mom and the other one was a yearling (she looks small because my veggies are so BIG! lol). I have been trying to garden harmoniously with the moose. Most of the things that I plant they don’t like. They love my lilac (in the background) and that is usually a great diversion. Unfortunately, I love love love sugar snap peas, and so do they.

Wow, I’ve been lucky the moose around here haven’t discovered my gardens! Just deer and other assorted critters. Our moose just walk by to get to the water. The secret is to yell and throw a measuring tape then?? :-)

I meant to say as well that I was sorry that the moose ate your sugar snap peas. It is tricky living with the larger wildlife. Because I am in the core area of the town we don’t get deer which most of the yards on the outskirts get, and bears haven’t been a nuisance here although they do go through. On the outskirts they are more of a ‘problem’ because they come down to eat fruit off the trees. Most of the long term residents are not too bothered about bears, but sadly complaints are made and quite a number of them get shot each year. We really are trespassing on their territory, especially with the expansion of the ski hill here and every third visitor coming in with small all-terrain vehicles or dirt bikes.

I’m sorry to hear about your snap peas Mcav0y! Hopefully the moose left something for you to eat as well ;).
Rainymountain – Your last comment sounds like you could have been talking about where I live almost exactly! Fortunately not many bears get shot around here though – it averages about 1 a year.

Good heavens!
Sorry to hear about your sugar snap peas but that is an amazing sight, having a moose in your garden (and I grumble about the rabbits, blackbirds and starlings in ours …)

Well, we sometimes get a fox or squirrel or two but nothing on the scale of moose (or bears)! I shall never complain about the pigeons again!

Wow, yes, pretty impressive sight to those of living in mooseless parts of the world. Probably a bit less thrilling for you! Snails are my main worry and the biggest animal I ever see in the garden is my cat!
