Toads

Sunday, 03 Aug 08

I have quite a lots of frogs and far fewer toads, the latter being my favourites so I was bemused to find one of my little friends lying on his back in the sun. I thought…is he out of his mind, toads don’t sunbathe and then realised he was a gonner so I sadly lifted his now rigid body only to find that whoever had killed my mate toady had made off with his head. I have never seen this before and I am quite surprised because as far as I am aware toads are poisonous to mammals and I cannot believe that a bird would bite off the head and leave the body….send for Miss Marple at once…sorry no photographic evidence

So sorry you lost one of your toads.

Something does eat them, I know that cats can be a problem, but there are natural predators too. There is a wood nearby that has a large and healthy toad population. In the spring, when they are all making their way to the ponds to breed, there are places which one can only describe as killing fields. Little mutilated corpses, or parts litter the ground. We’ve not see what is doing it, but that is a sign that there is a lot of predation.

Don’t look here if squeamish, or here.
