I have suspected we have rats accessing our balcony garden, made up primarily of edibles, and last night I did actually spot one.
I feel that poison won’t be very effective as the area we are in, there must be hundreds of thousands of rodents living within 200m of us – what I am looking for is a deterrent to keep them away from our balcony – so far they seem to like eating our spinach, but we also have zucchini and lettuces coming up soon, which I fear will suffer.
I have read Catnip, Chili, and Mint can deter rats, as well as some powdered deterrents (such as fox urine, if it is even available in Australia), or even putting out rubber snakes. Does anyone else have any tips?
PS: The rats are climbing up the external wall, so a fence of some kind will be ineffective and we don’t want to use ultrasonic repellents as that will affect the bats, and possibly dogs.

Mice and rats do not like any plants in the mint family. I am growing mints around the house, especially the “invasive” one.
