I was doing general harvesting last night. I picked some peppers, tomatoes, onions, oregano, and basil. My main objective was to gauge what had not fruited yet. I went out with my chart and surveyed all of the plants. Since the majority of my plants this season are peppers, I spent the most time looking at these (I split my journal today to cover those separately).
While I was looking at them, one plant seemed different, and was actually taller than the rest. Because I have 16 plants occupying my pepper bed, it’s fairly easy to have things go unnoticed because of the collective mass. When I took a good look, I laughed and said it out loud “this is a weed.” Sometimes the problem is right under your nose – I ran and got my camera to snap some shots, and you can see the weed in context in the middle of this first picture – it’s the light colored one. In the second picture, you can see the actual length. Hopefully with the weed gone, some of the plants in the back row should benefit.
Among the other harvests, were my first for the Bunching Onions and Oregano True Greek. I also did a comparison of the basil plants. I have Sweet Basil and Basil Napoletano. In the picture, the Sweet Basil is the left leaf, and the right two are the Basil Napoletano. The Napoletano is considerably more mild than the Sweet, but seems to grow much larger leaves. The leaf edges are also much more pointed – interesting stuff, makes me want to go look at my high school biology book :)

Was that weed lamb’s quarters? They will grow to a stately height, if permitted! 16 pepper plants is quite ambitious!

I think it was. I had no idea, I just read an article about it. Since it’s still out in the yard, we’ll have to try it.
Yeah, I tend to go all in with my limited space; but I’ll be dialing it back next year so the kids can romp some.

You may want to eat the lamb’s quarters – my friend’s husband is a chef & they came up with a delicious recipe for it. :-)
