Woke up early this morning, on a day where i am not scheduled for my early morning stair climb, and am wondering what to do with the windfall of an hour before waking up the kids. Delighted to remember an excuse to wander around the garden looking for photogenic blooms. Perfect, dry summer weather has set in, with no rain since July 20. We are in that season where gardening is all about watering. A sudden profusion of spiders reminds me that it is getting towards late summer. I will consider late summer official when the asters bloom.
“Kent Beauty”, my ornamental oregano, gets the August bloom day badge, for looking perfectly beautiful all summer, both to me and the bees.
Photos: Kent Beauty, Globe Thistle, Kim’s Knee High, the tomatillos which have grown huge and are fruiting beyond all reason, the same tomatillos two months ago on June 10. I wonder what I will do with them?

Tomatillo sauce for enchiladas would be an excellent use. The ornamental oregano is beautiful!

Your ornamental oregano is gorgeous, and I love the photo of the spider on the coneflower!
DH and I made salsa verde one year in Boston when I grew an excess of tomatillos. It turned out really well! I searched and found my journal from that day, which includes photos and a link to the recipe: http://myfolia.com/journals/69636-amazing-salsa-verde

I’m a native Texan and have a great (and easy) recipe for a salsa verde with tomatillos as a base. It’s wonderful and versatile — I use it as a salsa with chips, to put on eggs, over tacos or enchiladas or really just about anything. Drop me a note if you’re interested in the recipe.

As usual, lots of beautiful and intriguing things. The ornamental oregano is stunning – I want one! :) The color of your nasturtiums is very attractive too – will look out for that type as I grew ‘Empress of India’ this year but it’s a bit too orangey-red for my liking.

KWolfe0: thanks for the recipe. LouiseM—I am growing nasturtiums cherry rose jewel, which grows big and has a sweet scent, and vanilla berry, which is compact, as well as random volunteers.
