One week away, the bugs and birds take over
Tuesday, 14 Aug 12 Overcast 32°C / 90°F
I was gone for 10 days and the bugs clearly caught on that I was out of town and set up a buffet in my garden The cucumber beetles I battled early in the season on my cucumbers have hit my watermelons hard (and I didn’t even think they attacked watermelons). The corn earwigs have hit my Big Boy tomatoes and ruined over a pound of fruit today, which keeps reminding me of the lesson I learned this year: don’t plant your corn next to your maters.
I have been using Safer Brand Insect Killing Soap and it works well, but does zero to prevent re-infestations which seems to be my problem (I just can’t keep them away).
It rained almost the entire time I was away, so the garden was ripe for cracking tomatoes. This lead to a continued attack by the birds to peck at my tomatoes. Not only were some poked full of holes by the earwigs, but on the other side the clear signs of a birds beak striking home.
I’ve tried putting a bird bath nearby for the birds to get water, but it doesn’t stop them from getting in at the tomatoes. I may have to resort to bird netting, which I like to avoid as its a messy solution.
