I know you folians from the south and midwest wont be impressed with 92 F but here in Seattle no one has air conditioning. Our natural air conditioning (the marine cloud layer) is supposed to kick in tommorrow so I’m not complaining too much about the infernal heat. Pretty fun to go shopping and listen to the complainers—people talking about feeling faint and dizzy from the heat, worrying about heatstroke etc.

Usually tomato production doesnt really set in around here until mid August so I am pretty happy to have been getting a few early tomatoes. Picked my first big one today—a Pink Berkeley Tie-dye that I am excited to try.

I started my tomatoes on March 3 this year, and they were planted out between May 6 and 14.
Tomatoes to date, in order of when they began production:

Sungold: began harvesting on July 5, 15 fruits so far
flavor—sweet and tangy
Stupice: began harvesting on July 8, 11 fruits so far
moderate tomato flavor
Jaune Flammee: began harvesting on July 26, 4 fruits so far
like a larger sungold
Black Cherry: began harvesting July 28, 5 fruits so far
interesting smoky salty acidic flavor
Red Cushion: 1 fruit on August 3
strong basic tomato flavor
Pink Berkeley Tie-dye: 1 fruit on August 5
excellent texture and flavor—not like an early tomato at all. sweet, juicy, and tart. metallic green with a little pink on the outside, pink and green on the inside.

Sungold, Black Cherry and Red Cushion are cherries, and Jaune Flammee and Stupice are only a bit larger. Most of my big tomatoes are nowhere near ripe yet.
Next to start producing will be Buckbee’s, I think, which has many large clusters of green fruit, 1 turning red.

All the remaining tomato and tomatillo plants are setting fruit.
Still no fruit on the eggplant, which has been blooming for a while. Although its neighbors the tomatillo, nasturtium and fireweed are covered with all kinds of bees, i never notice any bees visiting it.

Not bad for a cool summer (until this weekend).

no rain for 12 days and i ran all 15 soaker hoses

i really like the black cherry—not sweet, but with a rich smoky acidic “black” flavor.

I’m excited too – even more since reading your description – to try the Pink Berkeley tie dye you kindly sent me, but they’re not quite ripe.
Had to laugh at your description of PNWer’s reaction to hot weather. It’s true – I’m one of ‘em – but the tomatoes and other “stuff” we insist on trying to grow in our temperate rain forest certainly appreciate it.
Loved the photo and all your “taste notes” – you’re a “tomatellier”!
