  • Very Happy

It was not opportune that we had such heavy rain on Tuesday but two leaves on each plant had started to brown, I have a retreat to be away at all weekend so ‘harvest’ it was.

I was disappointed that my largest head was not as big as last years but, I’ll live.
All varieties seem to run the gamut for size. Half came in smaller than I like; the other half are acceptable.

I started pulling the short rows and peeling one layer of paper….3 varieties or so. They all look so clean and pretty but I soon figured out that was too much work and and only cleaned by brushing off the soil from roots and bulbs. Considering the recent rain, the soil wasn’t too wet or sticky or bothersome. One good size plant felt limp after I pulled it and I think it might be the result of too much rain so I isolated it from the others. I’ll eat it soon. I never water my garlic after July 1 and we’ve had big rains since that date. Oh well.

All varieties except ‘georgian white’ were pulled. I just got too tired and I wanted to do some severe weed wacking on the grounds.

1. the total haul 236 heads
2. garlic ‘georgian crystal’ 14 heads
3. garlic ‘georgian fire’ 14 heads
4. garlic ‘musik’ 54 heads
5. garlic ‘german x-tra hardy’

Nice harvest. Sure, they’re on the green side, but as you indicate, nature is not always obliging.
As an aside, have these really been in the ground for a year and a half?

grailbeard…..I put the cloves in the ground in October of 2011. Sorry if I indicated faulty date on plant page. I get easily ‘turned around’ when I’m entering data here on folia.
I strive to have two leaves brown halfway down their length. This crop had the tips of two leaves turned brown and if I peeled….they came off so crop looks greener than it really is. My crop is usually ready the first week in August so I’m about 2 weeks ahead of schedule. I’d love to know how much size would have been gained in that time. I know there would be no skin on the head so ….not like it was a choice.

That’s quite a substantial harvest – should keep you going for a while.

anelson, I use 200+ cloves as seed stock (approx 40 heads), bring a big head or two as a hostess gift when invited to dinner or such, tincture a pint or so, make pesto and a lot of garlic bread and yes….. I do use a LOT of garlic, otherwise. This year I had about 10 heads left over. I’m comfortable with that.
Thank you all for you positive feedback. It’s quite a boost to my ego.

Well, thank you anelson but I can’t believe that there must be other folia members who are growing more garlic than I am. It’s funny….I recently reorganized my garlic data here on folia to show each variety on it’s own with quantity numbers for each and it generated the ‘Herbologist’ badge for me. I think that badge should be revoked though once before when I asked that to be done….it was not possible. I’ll live with it but growing 200+ garlic plants does not, an ‘herbologist’ make.
