  • Very Happy

Pulled all the garlic today and I’m pretty pleased with the harvest. The ones that impressed me the most were the German Red, although there’s nothing red about mine. All of the heads are nice and big and the same from the beginning to the end of the row. I was disappointed in the Georgia Crystal and Polish Jenn as they were not consistent in size at all. The Music and Northern Quebec were also not consistent, but even their smaller heads were a decent size. I’m thinking that for this fall’s planting purposes, I will save the biggest heads of the German Red, Music, and Northern Quebec, and that I will use two beds instead of just one.

Once the garlic was out of the bed, I pulled a few weeds, then put in some alfalfa pellets before cultivating the soil, then planted buckwheat.

I also added some alfalfa pellets to the failing rutabaga bed, cultivated it, and planted buckwheat in there. I had to leave a little clearing because there is one rutabaga plant that has sprouted in the last week or so, and one possible other one … after what, two months? How amazing!

I pulled the nettle from the bed the “miniature” corn is in and put it all in the barrel by the garden sinks, and added more water. Hopefully some nice nettle tea with make all my plants very happy. Today I did put some I’d made already on the tomato beds.

Oops … forgot to pull the Elephant Garlic.

Nice crop there; you should be proud.
‘Musik’ is one of my favorite varieties and this year I think I also have (new for me) 14 ‘rosy musik’.
I’m growing 45 ‘georgian crystal’ among others. :fingers crossed:
Wish me luck; I’m starting my garlic harvest tomorrow.
    Makin’ pesto?

Thanks rosemarieGardener. No, I don’t make pesto … just use the cloves all winter :)

Very nice! Have you ever put your garlic bulbs in the ground in early Spring instead of Fall?
I’m just curious because I’ve always been a Fall planter, but the farmer I got my bulbs from last year plants his in the Spring.

Thanks Deanna … no, I’ve always planted mine in the fall. Of course, my great voice of experience is exactly two years old! :)
