My vegetable garden is definitely in decline, but the asparagus is holding up to our 100+ degree spree remarkably well, and the Crocosmia patch may be flattened from last week’s intense rain storm but it’s still blooming up a storm!

Those Crocosmias are so pretty. Do they tolerate any shade at all? And how do they hold up to deer?

Uh oh! If that’s what your asparagus looks like just now – mine is only about 3-6 inches tall. Mine must be all but dead!

@sheepandwool: I love them too! The Crocosmias in this photo are actually in a pretty shady spot, against my back fence, partially overhung by trees. So partial shade isn’t a problem. I’ve never seen deer (or evidence of deer) in my yard, so I don’t have any personal data to contribute on that topic. But the New Jersey Agricultural Station rates them as “Seldom Severely Damaged” by deer.

@JimMarconnet: 3-6 inches tall at this time of year is pretty tiny! Did you start yours from seed or from crowns? Are the ferny bits a healthy shade of green, or are they more yellowish?
