I’m trying for the very first time to grow some Celery here in Huntsville AL USA in 1-gallon milk containers in a plastic box “boq”. Some plants have very few roots, so it does not look all that good so far. Perhaps too much “bog”. And none of them have grown very tall like I’d expect celery to grow TALL!
Does anyone here successfully grow celery and have anything that I can watch and compare with?
I’ve tried searching on celery several places here, but have not figured out how to find out who’s growing it.

If you want the traditional celery stalks then you will have to water regularly, feed & be patient. It is a VERY long season crop. It can – but likely won’t – taste like you grocery’s celery. It will most likely be thinner, woodier but much much tastier. It will take months to grow. I don’t grow my celery for snacking. It is too strong & hard. I gow it to cook with. I add it to stir frys & lots of recipes (shepherd’s pie, etc). It is excellent in potato salad. The big thick kind of celery that you cut up for celery sticks is too much work for me, although I know of at least 1 person who grows it in self watering containers with great success. I have posted that link on a another of your celery growing question threads. If you don’t have very good roots on your celery, I would guess that the “bog” type of soil is rotting them or stunting their growth. My celery does best in an area of the garden where it gets very regular water – but not drowning. Try putting some holes in the bottom of your bog container & see what happens. Good luck with your growing season.

Thanks so much nickyn for the wealth of info!
I drilled holes in my bog box earlier to limit the water depth. But that tends to leave some water down there all the time. Suppose I need to figure out a way to raise and to lower the celery containers out of and back into the water regularly. Now just how to do that? Hmmmmmm.
My wife would like me to just dump the Celery growing experiment and just buy it at the store. At about $1.00 per stalk, that would be much more cost-effective for me.

Jim,
L O L…
I have had zero luck growing celery. I have not even had seeds germinate.
If you can get them to germinate you have done better than me.
I agree with your wife, since it is so cheap at the store and so diff. to grow, I gave up on it.
I even read many acticles on the best way to grow it and still have not even get them to germinate.
G L to ya bud.
Have a good day

Hi Jim – to find out who is growing the same plant as you, you can search via the main plant page here and type in the common name or botanical name for the plant you are after.
Once on the plant page, you will see the number of plantings on Folia for this plant – Celery has 227 plantings that you can take a look at (just click on the number to get to the planting list page)
Plantings of Celery on Folia
(The other way is to go to your planting page, and under Planting Data you will find the same number to click on next to the plant name and the variety)
Hope this helps :)
